Bellevue group helps 'Miracle Baby' begin road to his recovery
Phung Thien Nhan, now known as the Miracle Baby of Vietnam, defied death after just three days of life.
Abandoned by his mother on a bed of pineapple leaves, Thien Nhan spent his first 72 hours starving, covered in insects, and in unthinkable pain from an animal bite that took off his right leg and genitals.
Two years later, he spent a recent morning playing with a new toy cell phone in his baby stroller.
"He adapts to new things very well," said Tran Mai Anh, his adoptive mother. "Now he feels safe and happy."
Thien Nhan and his family stopped in Seattle on Aug. 14 on their way to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where doctors will perform surgery on the lower half of the boy"s body.
Son Michael Pham met them at the airport. Pham, who is the founder of the Bellevue-based nonprofit Kids Without Borders, raised the money needed for their transportation.
''Miracle baby' arrives home after US surgery
SEATTLE -- Surgeons are lining up to help a so-called "miracle baby of Vietnam."
The child survived the jungle for several days after wild animals attacked him. And the people who meet the 2 year old call him an inspiration.
Thien Nhan was abandoned at birth and nearly killed by dangerous animals. But he's come a long way since.
On Thursday he landed at Sea-Tac Airport en route to the East Coast where surgeons await.
Hours on a jet crossing the Pacific hardly wore down the spirits of the boy and his adoptive parents. There was not a single shadow on their faces when they landed at Sea-Tac International Airport.
"I'm very excited and I look forward to see what happens," said Tran Mai Anh, the boy's adoptive mother.
The toddler has become a small celebrity in Vietnam. The animal attacks have left him disfigured for life, but the child beat the odds and captured the heart of a nation. And coming to America is a chance for a new start.

Thanks to the ceaseless efforts of his adoptive mother, Tran Mai Anh, and her friends as well as the kind sponsorship of others, last month Thien Nhan travelled to the US where he underwent surgery to help begin reconstructing his genitals.
